Jonathan Larson’s extraordinary Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical is back at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center as part of our 30th Anniversary Season. Having paved the way for contemporary musical theatre, RENT is a beloved cultural phenomenon, known for its raw, resonant storytelling and remarkable rock score.
Inspired by Puccini’s La Bohème, RENT follows a year in the life of seven New Yorkers on the Lower East Side. As these young, impoverished artists struggle to create, the group navigates major life changes, relationship struggles, fulfillment of dreams, the loss of loved ones, and living in the age of HIV/AIDS. Together, their stories paint a stunningly emotional portrait of the gritty bohemian world of New York City, and emphasize the power of meaningful human connection in a time of crisis.
RENT’s Tony-winning score includes a phenomenal list of musical theater anthems, including “I’ll Cover You,” “Take Me or Leave Me,” “La Vie Boheme,” and the iconic ballad “Seasons of Love.” Since its groundbreaking Broadway debut in 1996, RENT has touched the lives of millions around the globe, becoming a cultural phenomenon with its timeless themes of love, resilience, hope, community, and identity.
